2 new assistant director positions added as well to create more robust commitment to education across the cancer research continuum

ANN ARBOR, Michigan — The University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center has named Sarah Hawley, Ph.D., M.P.H., associate director for training, education and career development. She will lead the center’s efforts to coordinate and enhance robust resources that support faculty, trainees and students interested in cancer research.

In addition, two new assistant director positions were created to provide additional support to these efforts and bring varied perspectives representing the continuum of cancer researchers, including basic science, clinical research and population sciences. Goutham Narla, M.D. Ph.D., and N. Lynn Henry, M.D., Ph.D., will serve as assistant directors.

“The Rogel Cancer Center has been a huge source of support for me throughout my career. It’s gratifying to have the opportunity to give back through this role. Education and training programs are tremendous way to make an impact on the growth and development of people’s careers,” says Hawley, professor of medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and professor of health management and policy and of health behavior and health education at the School of Public Health.

Hawley received her doctorate from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health and joined the University of Michigan faculty in 2004. Her research focuses on evaluating and improving patient-centered cancer care across the continuum from screening through treatment and into survivorship, with a focus on vulnerable populations.

Hawley is currently the co-leader of the cancer center’s health behavior and outcomes research program. She has served on numerous education and training committees and has consistently provided mentorship and support to junior faculty.

“Dr. Hawley has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to mentoring and supporting the careers of trainees and junior faculty. Her expertise and passion in this area will bring new ideas and bolster existing efforts to develop the next generation of cancer pioneers,” says Eric Fearon, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Rogel Cancer Center.

Narla is professor and division chief of genetic medicine at Michigan Medicine. He has held several leadership positions in his career focusing on education and training. His research interests focus on understanding the mechanisms driving human cancer development and progression.

Henry is associate professor of hematology/oncology at Michigan Medicine and the breast oncology disease lead for the Rogel Cancer Center. As a physician, she specializes in the care of patients with breast cancer. Her research focuses on personalizing treatment for breast cancer, including ways to manage symptoms and side effects of cancer and its treatment. She is active in many clinical trials.

Hawley replaces Beth Lawlor, M.D., Ph.D., who left the university in June. Her appointment as well as the assistant director appointments are effective March 1.
